Joe Arencibia brings the functional creativity of his decades in engineering to the art of fine carpentry and woodworking.

The art of wood crafting can be beautiful and functional. What it cannot be is static. The uses and needs of 21st century wood pieces are not the same as they were even thirty years ago. I appreciate and admire the master woodworkers for their experience and craft. They are true artists of the form and they are far better at it than I am. But, I also find that these traditions of form stifle new functional creativity.

Modern wood pieces must be harmonious and compatible with the modern things that go in, on, and around them. Modern pieces are also not just wood. As an engineer, I spent decades designing industrial systems and things. They could survive a tornado or an earthquake, and could probably hold the weight of your car. They were ugly as sin, but they were functional as hell. As a woodworker, I learned to make all the pretty things. When you put those two concepts together, great design can happen.

I begin every piece on the computer, with thoughtful designs and layouts to achieve both the function and the form. More importantly, we’ll do this part together. That crazy idea you have that you can’t find in a catalog? That unruly heap of A/V, networking, and gaming devices you need a home for? That unique outdoor structure you want? Bring it to me and we’ll try to make it real. Initial consultations and conceptual designs are always free. So is that beverage we may have in the process.

Basically, I take your wild or unique needs and make them real. I design and build things that integrate the function with the form. And, to be honest, I don’t really like to deal with the less wild ideas or common requests. Need a kitchen full of shaker cabinets? Cool. There’s like a dozen people in the area who can make them way faster than me. They’ll gladly do it and they’ll do great work. (Don’t get me wrong, I love a good shaker cabinet.) Need that thing that everyone else said ‘no’ to or that doesn’t exist in a catalog? I’m your guy.
